48V Solar Sizing for 24/7 Baseline Needs
I’m researching and building a scalable 48V solar system on a budget.
Living in Rio Grande Estates requires a strategy that balances the abundance of New Mexico sun with the reality of limited storage. Currently, I am operating on a “razor’s edge” efficiency model: a 350W portable power station is the sole life-support for my refrigeration and communications (including my 17W T-Mobile gateway). By running my apartment fridge at its lowest setting and strictly limiting other draws, I’ve proven that a minimal footprint is possible—but it lacks the surge capacity for growth. And it’s expensive.
The move to a 48-volt architecture is about creating a robust, low-maintenance hub that can handle the “Biology of Decay” (composting/fermentation/preservation prep) and digital advocacy without the constant drone of a generator.

The Baseline Math:
- Fridge + Internet: ~123W Peak / ~1.6 kWh daily.
- The Foundation: 1,000W Solar Array (4x 250W used panels) + 5.1kWh LiFePO4 Battery.
- The Result: 3+ days of autonomy during dust storms and enough surge to run power tools.
In the future post I’ll discuss wiring and scaling the system, wiring safety, building the infrastructure to support the panels, and incorporating the panels into our Permaculture landscape engineering to provide shade and water collection capacity.
The Nature’s Vessel 48V Solar Road Map
- Phase 1: 1,000W Array (Used Panels) + 1 Server Rack Battery + 3,000W Inverter.
- Expansion: As funds allow, add 1,000W chunks of panels and additional battery “bricks” to the rack.
- Thermal Backup: The Outdoor Cob Oven and Rocket Mass Heater ensure that even if the batteries are low, the core needs of heat and food are met by the biology of the Llano. Look for posts in the near future.
Project Status Note: This is early-stage planning for our permanent solar infrastructure. We are currently in the phase of gathering materials and refining the design.
